January–May 2026 Update: Lives Changed, Litters Prevented
From January 1 through May 22, thanks to the support of our community and partners, we’ve accomplished:
🐱 1,090 feline spays and neuters
🐶 101 canine spays and neuters
🚐 191 cats and kittens transported to Sweet Paws Rescue
🤝 4 cats transported with Oktibbeha County Humane Society
❤️ 5 cats and kittens transported with West Point Clay County Humane Society
These numbers represent lives changed, suffering prevented, and a community working together to address pet overpopulation.
As we move deeper into kitten season, we want to take a moment to talk about the reality facing rescuers, shelters, veterinary clinics, and foster homes right now.
Rescue work is difficult year-round, but spring and summer bring an overwhelming surge of kittens. What often begins as a friendly stray showing up on someone’s porch can quickly become a litter of kittens because life got busy, an appointment never got made, or someone assumed there was still time.
Sometimes, it becomes even more heartbreaking.
An unspayed cat may be exposed to diseases such as FIV or FeLV, which can then be passed to her kittens. Those kittens may struggle to thrive, require extensive medical care, or not survive at all. Sadly, we’ve already encountered this situation three times this season.
Now multiply that story by the countless unspayed cats living outdoors throughout our communities. The burden placed on rescues, shelters, fosters, and veterinary providers becomes enormous. Many organizations are already operating at or beyond capacity.
The good news is that affordable spay and neuter resources are available right here in our area. In fact, getting help is as simple as clicking the “Need Help” button on the homepage of OperationColonyCats.org. We’ll help connect you with available resources and point you in the right direction.
If you want to make a difference in your community, please:
✔️ Spay and neuter your pets
✔️ Share local low-cost resources with friends and neighbors
✔️ Encourage others to make appointments before kittens are born
✔️ Help spread the message that prevention saves lives
Every spay and neuter prevents suffering.
